So happy that I've reached Marineford with you guys! I totally agree with McKay about the tone of this arc being a major issue, yet I also enjoy the Buggy content, so I find myself in a happy medium here. Pacing isn't the major issue this arc, but the manga arc only being 25 chapters really makes it feel a lot tighter when reading it. Impel Down is a bottom 15 arc overall for me, but the manga version definitely bumps it up a few spots

See how much expectation can alter one’s view and your feelings. When you expect them to have a drop on Tuesday, but it didn’t happen you get disappointed. What if I tell you that they will drop two episodes on Friday beforehand. You would have feel nothing about no drops on Tuesday. However I can understand how this arc is probably less enjoyable if the Buggy/Mr.3 comedy didn’t hit. Although I agree it was sometimes overdone, I found it hilarious 😭 my siblings and I STILL quote the Muggy ball sequence lol

Regarding “Wash your potatoes” joke: Luffy is trying to use the saying 首を洗って待て (kubi o aratte mate) which literally means “wash your neck and wait” It’s a threat that basically means “wait for your punishment” or “I’ll deal with you later” The phrase comes from the idea of washing your neck before an execution But instead he says 芋を洗って待て (imo o aratte mate), which means “wash your potatoes and wait” English speakers might expect “watch your neck” not “wash your neck” so it looks like a wash vs watch joke but in Japanese “wash” is correct and “potatoes” is the mistake. It’s common for japanese comedy when “dumb but confident” characters remember the structure of an idiom but forget the key word

I'm not trying to counter your opinion on the arc but maybe it was such a hard first watch because of your own pacing…What I mean is if you would have watched more episodes per week (8-10 episodes) it would have felt like the arc came by faster and the moments that were being dragged they wouldn’t have been this annoying to you guys. That’s what I did the first time I watched the arc I was watching at least 20-25 episodes per week even more sometimes and maybe that's why the Buggy/Mr 3 duo is the last thing I think about when I think about Impel Down. I don’t exactly know how many episodes you guys watch per week but it has to be less than 8 or 10. I think that’s probably why even for us this arc felt really long and difficult because we aren’t getting where we want fast and you’re feeling it too… by saying that I’m not forcing you to post more or to overwork yourselves but you have to realize that One Piece is a long anime/story and watching a really small amount of episodes every week is not going to make you advance fast in the story and because of other issues that were mentioned several time (redundant humor and moments that y’all don’t necessarily like, pacing…) it's going to add to what you're already feeling and you’re going to be frustrated with the show and start to maybe dislike it when it could’ve been avoided all along. To give you an example the One Piece pacing is to you guys what your viewing and publishing pacing is to us.. And for the people in the comments repeatedly saying “Use One Pace” it won’t change anything if they keep using this rhythm of 4 episodes per week or even less episodes per week if they use One Pace… the proof is that they used One Pace for Thriller Bark and hated it anyway. I’m not saying they would’ve loved it if they finished it faster but it sure as hell wouldn’t have dragged the way it did and it would have been more fluid of an experience watching the arc for the first time ! One Pace is not the ultimate solution it’s their own pacing that needs to be changed if they want to enjoy the story and be caught up with the show because at this point I think Oda might finish it before them 😭😭😭.

Ruffy and Buggy being the main suspects makes sense. Ruffy broke into the prison and Buggy was already out of the cell by himself without Ruffys help. After that he was the one who guided Ruffy to the lower levels. And at the end they we're recognized as the leaders of their groups when they finally broke out. Sure Jimbei and Crocodile played a significant role, but it was Ruffy and Buggy who got it all started.

Couldn't disagree more with carter's take that pacing wasn't an issue for Impel Down. If for some reason you're not counting filler as pacing issues, sure but bro this arc is like 60% filler and adapted ONE chapter per episode when a normal paced anime does THREE. Someone did the math and it adds up to 331 minutes of content that's not shown in the manga. That's more than 16 episodes of buggy mr.3 Hannyabel shenanigans - the arc itself is 27 episodes btw. So we basically have 11 episodes of real content if this was normally paced. You can't tell me that wouldn't make this arc a billion times better. Even cannon was saying the buggy thing is funny its just stretched out. Which you may disagree on as well if u think this arc shoulda been 100% serious, which at that point we are never going to agree. One Piece should always have humorous bits/ "tone shifts" and its my fav and most important part of the show, not the world building or anything else.

People keep bringing up one pace for Marineford again and again, and I think we need to stop pushing it because it is not worth it. They are not going to do it, and even if they did, it would probably end up being a single episode at most, and that is only if they suddenly changed their minds, which is unlikely. The real time when one pace becomes really important is the post time skip, so we should save the push for then. At this point it is better to just let them watch Marineford normally and focus on it afterwards when it matters even more. I am not pretending I am innocent in this. I have been one of the people who pushed for one pace the most. For a very long time, and even now I personally think Marineford should be paced. Even if I contradict myself, it is getting really tiring hearing about it every single time. So every one pace fan like me, just let it go, and we can come back to it after the arc.

I actually really loved Naruto on first and second watch, but this being my third and fist reaction since most reactioners watch dub, I somehow was too focused on the flaws and things I didn’t like, to enjoy it as much. Never had that problem with OP, though. It always gets better on rewatch, not only because of reactioners, but I keep finding new clues dropped early on in the series.

If an arc has more episodes than chapters then it means it has more filler padding than actual manga content - in this case with one piece this issue gets worse and the padding gets bigger so pacing objectively is an issue

Fact is if an arc has MORE episodes than Chapters, it is objectively badly paced because ur getting more filler than manga material. If you go back and look at the stuff complained about in this arc - it WAS mainly filler content as a result of extended Pacing. So pacing defs is a huge issue because over 60% of the arc is non canon reactions or extended scenes with mediocre, unserious characters and moments - most of you couldn't tell it was filler because its blended in to pace it longer. which tires it. How would you know if you havnt seen the original make up of this arc - if u look at its canon material compare to toeis adaptiation - its been extended greatly. The execution of the adaptation makes a world of difference, hence why manga readers and one Pace watchers enjoy it more. Its supposed to be a fast arc but its bloated with MORE episodes than chapters. Pacing is the main issue. That being said i agree with the threat of the government being reduced to mediocrity by more lighthearted tones and jokes, but thats to a much lesser extent in the manga hence why many of us stress to use one pace for certain arcs

Ahh the end of another arc, we're finally moving onto peak. I have to agree with McKay on this one, I was originally pretty excited for this arc but the tone shift really did go on for too long. Although I do disagree on the pacing part, I think that it lets the arc down a bit as the jokes at the start were funny but just started to drag imo. I think the lead up to Marineford clouds everyone's vision due to the hype as well. Overall not the worst arc in my books but no where near the top 5.

Guys, its so obvious that you prefer One Pace over normal episodes. I believe you should just stick to it and solely watch One Pace from now on (or maybe after Marineford, but idk, dont want to comment on that,) to make it more enjoyable for yourselves. Most of us has seen this series already, so I believe we would also love it more if you guys like the arcs more. Remember One Pace Skypia vs normal Skypia? One Piece's normal pacing is made for people who can binge it and or skip 5-10 seconds easily anyway. Watching 2 normal episodes a day has too less story progression, especially to have a good post-view conversation about it imo.

The way the boys said that the pacing didn’t necessarily bother them but it was the added filler and people are saying “yeah I knew they hate the pacing”.....they just said it wasn’t the pacing tho😂Sometimes added filler directly affects the pacing but other times it doesn't. We could have a good episode with no added filler but the pacing is still not hitting. The added filler from time to time is sometimes unfortunate/annoying like that one episode, but other times the filler flows and makes the episode better like Robin’s whereabout ep. Or if we go way back in the day, the last ep of Arlong park when they added a touching scene of Bellamy giving Nami a push. And the walk to Arlong Park too. So, it has its ups and downs. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes not. Once you get the pattern with this show, you accept that sometimes there will be a few times of certain added filler because it’s Toei. And that's really the only downside that can't be fixed unless Toei does something abt it😂 I do hate the pacing/one pace discussion talks only bc it just goes on and on a lot of the time. Regarding Impel Down, it is a dark/serious theme. I think the jokes/light hardness help the audience not be so depressed by where we are but when you think deeper, especially during any of the serious eps/scenes in this arc, you start to wonder: Do the basic amenities of life have an on and off switch based off of the context of everybody else around you and how they deem you as a human being? Kinda like what McKay said before on how the treatment of these imprisoners are inhumane. Imagine writing an entire arc that doubles as a condemnation of the prison industrial complex. And how these systems are destined with the express intent to punish inmates rather than rehabilitation. To the point where the warden and the guards are cosplaying as literal demons as their official uniform. And the rank of foul grunts in Impel Down are not even human. It has been built into this Dante's inferno-esque progression where the worst defenders are found on the lowest floor of this six level structure. Each level is also named after some variation of hell. And the way how Impel Down was built foreshadows if you look closely is kinda crazy. And if we think about Bon Clay’s sacrifice even harder, it’s so dark that he willingly stayed in hell to help his friend be free. That selfishness is not found that much often in this universe, his loyalty remains very heart felt. (sorry for long rant, recovering from hungover😂)

Yeah, I think that point really flies under the radar, it definitely did for me. I’ve never read the manga, and on this rewatch we went through Skypiea, Enies Lobby, and Thriller Bark with One Pace, so I wasn’t dealing with all the usual padding and filler content, and I only retrospectively realised how much of a difference it makes. Then you get to Impel Down in the OG format and realise that almost half the arc is filler and not even particularly good filler, and as you said it just throws the whole pacing off. It’s kind of crazy how much it changes the experience, especially when it's over such a long stretch of episodes

The balance of humor in the manga is better, it's just enough to keep you from being depressed and scared in Impel Down, imo. I could see it still not being your cup of tea but it's definitely the additional humor and pacing in the anime that change it from a favorite arc in the manga to kind of a middling arc in the anime.

My advice for they boys , stop thinking of One Piece as something it's not, and you will enjoy it more. One Piece is a comedy/action/adventure story ,Not AOT thriller drama. Not saying you have to like it for what it is , but don't expect it to change. One Piece has a lot of sad and serious moment's but far more joy and comedy , for a reason also... that you will find out later. Love the reactions BTW.

I do get why ppl were referring to impel down as having “pacing issues” as most of the buggy/mr3 stuff that was bothering yall was added in to pad the eps by Toei unfortunately plus a lot of other random scenes that I won’t go too much into (one pace cuts all that down to 10 eps I think) so even if you guys didn’t “feel” like it was a pacing issue, it definitely was because this arc shouldn’t have been longer than 10-13 eps if it weren’t for Toei adding stuff
