Yeah I agree with you guys, by the time luffy gets to arlong in the anime, he shows how strong he is by one shotting Richie the lion, rampaging against the black cat pirates, power diffing the quickness of kuro, bypassing the heavy armory of don krieg with his pure strength, determination, and willingness to sacrifice his own safety to win.

Emily killed the "Help me" scene. I liked the Garp B-plot. I think we will get a lil bit of him, with Koby's training arc in Marineford and then Smoker will take over their role as the B-plot.

Okay this episode and the last one are the ones i haven't seen. Nami definitely came around for me this episode. Her backstory was done okay (i'm blaming netflix for the bad pacing and their 8 episode rule rather than the writers) but Emily's acting was so so good. I really hope she has more anime nami charisma - i was not a fan of the debbie downer stuff - following arlong's defeat especially because she's a massive fan of the show. That aside idk why they didn't include Hachi in this, if they manage to get to a certain important arc 🫧 (just in case of first time watchers i won't spoil) the whole reason that moment happens is because he gets shot so i really don't know how they're going to do that but that's like season 5's problem or something lol

I don't like the way Luffy is shouting in the live action. I feel like it lacks the emotion. The moment with Nami was great until that part😓 anyway the moment "You're my daughters" does not fail to make me tear up even in the live action. I'm just a crybaby when it comes to moments like that in any show. Of course they have to be done well also.

I agree with his line delivery could improve (acting). I think his English is fine, there's a noticeable accent but that's no problem. I like that OPLA let the actors maintain their accents, makes the world feel bigger imo.

In the anime/manga Jinbei was first mention by Yasaku to luffy & Sanji while on the boat heading to arlong park. It was also said that he is a warlord. (Episode 31)

I don’t think it was a better job because it was clear that oda had it all planned out from the beginning with the fishman stuff but was saving it for later when it became more relevant and as luffy and the others got closer to the hub of the fishman which is at the centre of the grand line. If you see a future arc that (the Geks haven’t seen yet)you should be able to understand that. The live action rushed the anti fishman discrimination aspect which distracts away from the objective cruelty arlong is causing and takes away from Nami and her homeland’s suffering. It’s almost clear that oda kept these things seperate between arcs so they can both be fleshed out equally without distracting and meddling with the other’s equally important story.

I watched the live action first before I watched the anime so I guess I am a little biased. Like the live action was what got me into the anime so I guess my opinion of luffy is little different. And I'd say Usopp is still my least favorite even though he's much better in the live action. I like that you guys' opinion is so different from mine. Even though ya'll wish luffy was a lot stronger in the live action, I'm still grateful and enjoyed the reaction nonetheless. Excited to see the last ep reaction!

This episode also had some real highlights for me: I do agree with McKay that less Garp might have worked better, but him showing up in the Baratie, talking to Zeff? Every rewatch, I love this moment. Also Sanji telling Nojiko he sees the resemblance to Nami, even though they look nothing alike, is hilarious. I had the exact same reaction as her when I first watched it. Like bro, chill with the rizz haha

I hate Arlong, but I think the LA does an even better job of showing his core conflict with humans. In the Anime, we don’t learn until much later that fishmen have every reason to resent humans. They’re still treated like trash, even under the guise of peace treaties and “abolished” slavery; which clearly isn’t the reality. The parallel to how black people have been treated throughout history is apparent. Without spoiling too much, Arlong’s hatred is understandable, but the way he chooses to perpetuate the cycle of abuse, turning it against the weak, is exactly how hate keeps reproducing itself across generations. It reminded me of the contrast between MLK’s message of empathy and Malcolm X’s more radical approach. The same dynamics we see in our world are reflected in One Piece, just through a different group.

I also agree that Luffy really is the weakest of the cast. I really don't like how they changed how Luffy acted about Nami in this arc. In the anime/manga, Luffy literally couldn't give a single shit about anything to do with Nami's past because it didn't matter to him and he didn't listen to any of it, he already decided that Nami was his friend and that he was going to help her no matter what. Also, Luffy being very weak physically in the live action show also makes no sense. The "underdog" thing for "more natural growth" is stupid because that is almost never how Luffy has been portrayed for the entire series, and most certainly not in the East Blue. In fact I'd say he was probably the strongest person there from chapter/episode 1.

everything else aside, one of my bigger qualms with the live action is that i really hate what they did to nojiko and nami's relationship :(( i kinda understand if they couldn't make it village wide, but nojiko was the one confidant that she knowingly had, and her literal character design ties into her bond with nami in terms of the tattoos she got done and all...like mannn 😔😔

I think they purposefuly made Luffy slightly weaker than in the manganime because he's meant to be an underdog with a weak power that he uses creatively, but, until Kizaru, Sentomaru and Kuma on Sabaody, he basically dogwalks every villain he's up against (with the exception of Croc), especially if you consider that all of them had at least a full decade of experience more than him. So it works better at selling him as a scrappy underdog going up against people who are way more capable than him - if Season 3 is mainly just Alabasta, as many people are predicting, I imagine that at least one episode is entirely dedicated to Luffy's final fight with Crocodile, to really sell that Crocodile is a mountain that he needs to overcome and that the Grand Line isn't a joke

watching the press tour and all the videos of the cast interacting before the actual show was super helpful I think because I agree Luffy is pretty animated in the show, but when you watch those videos you realize that Iñaki is just like that?? Bro could not be nonchalant to save his life Also side note if I ever met the anime/manga Monkey family irl I would probably never want to meet them again because they are legitimately insane, like something is wrong with them. So even tho there are moments where Garp or Luffy might feel weird, to me it feels normal because they are Not.

I think they're trying to make Luffy more of an underdog in Live Action in order to make his growth more organic, instead of going for the big-fish, little-pond aspect that they had in the anime. So he struggles more with battles. Also, the fact that they need to CGI his attacks means that they want to limit how much on-screen attacking he does, so some of the more 'murder stomp' fights got cut. That said, we still got him trouncing Kuro, one-punching Alvida and rocketing Buggy. But do keep in mind that strength feats are a bit easier to show off in anime than in real life - you can't really have him picking up people and tossing them around like he does in the anime since it'd be harder to make that look natural. It's best to think of the manga, anime and live action as their own different takes on the same story, with some differences between them. In the live action, Luffy is a bit weaker than in the other two, but to make up for it, he's a bit smarter and less prone to playing with his prey. (Not that he doesn't mess around a bit in battle, but much less than he does in the anime and manga.)

TIME TO NERD OUT I am the number one lover of the OPLA soundtrack, and one of my favorite things about this show is how they use music to convey subtle messages so I’m here to talk about one of my favorite musical moments in the entire show MWAHAHAHA In the scene at 20:03 you’ll hear a soft song start when Nami rejects Luffy’s offer for help and tells them all to go away. That? is part of a song titled “Luffy Help Me”, and it plays again, one more time in this episode. Where you might ask? *smirks* I’m sure you can guess. Emily already does a fantastic job of showing Nami’s internal conflict when she walks away from them, and in the other scene hehehe, but Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli went above and beyond to give the assist for these amazing scenes. Side note, the song that plays when Garp walks into Baratie is one of my absolute FAVORITES - it’s called More Rare Than Medium and the transition from the Marines’ rigid military theme to the smooth, sultry jazz of Baratie is just *sanji’s kiss* there’s an entire mixtape dedicated JUST to the jazzy, big band-esque music for the Baratie episodes. Man I love music

Live action is good but there are so many small lines or scene setups I would preferred from the anime that I feel like would hit much better here in the live action. I’m hoping next season luffy and Zoro are worked/ try a different style that might fit there characters? They don’t need to act like the anime characters but need to find the dialogue that hits for Luffy and Zoro.
