"I wonder of we're seeing things that will come into play later" Without spoiling anything, in the second episode Fern said that she collected odd spells, like "how to turn grapes sour" the next episode we learned that Frieren had troubled getting to know her old party when Himmel mentioned she wanted Merkur pudding, Eisen mentioned he liked sour grapes the sour the better. This episode we see Frieren using that spell to change the grapes sour that they were eating.

One of the reasons Frieren is a top 5 anime for me is because it has an entirely unique way of designing every frame, every town, and everything about its world so that even the things that have no real meaning are beautifully crafted. Even though we haven't seen that much, if feels like the world is very lived-in, the towns feel alive and everything feels like its own functioning society. Which is one thing that MANY other fantasy manga's and anime really struggle with. They have a decent concept for a story, but the characters and the story feel disconnected from the world they they inhabit. Its one of the biggest reasons why I love One Piece so much as well. Because in both stories, even though we may only be seeing the adventures of the main cast most of the time, it doesn't feel like time just stops for the rest of the world that isn't within the scope of what the main cast is up to.

You'll notice it more later, but I remember noticing the level of detail, particularly with fabrics and human movement, and being amazed on my first watch.

I love the conversation at the end. Carter's point was very interesting and true. I'm 20 now, and I still think that my childhood was the best, happiest period of my life, but when I was a kid, I just couldn't wait to grow up. I wish I would have appreciated it more. If only I could return to the past but as I am currently. Still, I try to enjoy my 20s too, so that hopefully, I won't have the same regrets when I grow even older haha. This is still my time of freedom without much responsibilities, it's a time to appreciate.

My thoughts: For Frieren, I don't know if you really need to look for things specifically (referring to McKay's comment); it's just you either understand what the show is trying to impart or you don't. The "prologue" is a preview of what the show is going to bring and what the experience will be like, no smoke and mirrors. The plot is not one-note, but at its core Frieren is very consistent in what it wants to be. It's the most all-encompassing expression of the human experience that I've seen in anime so far. You don't have to agree with everything it espouses, I certainly don't, but I think everyone who clears a certain threshold of media literacy should be able to at least appreciate it in some way. I also really think this is a show where you should not be as focused on plot elements. For example, I appreciate Jack's questioning and active thinking, but I believe the viewing experience for this show is best when you fully immerse yourself and simply enjoy it for what it is. The writing is masterful, and there's a clear direction it wants to head in. I think there's something to be said about patiently waiting for future events to unfold, because this show does an amazing job at answering questions, so no need to worry!

How many animes have you seen where the lead characters are female and even the legendary figures are also female, yet it neither feels forced nor "traditionally feminine and sexy" for male gaze. It's just so natural and among all of these male centered animes gives me a sense of freshness, like this is how you write female characters. A masterclass in deed. Even the Himmel shows how great and attractive secured and soft men can be!

I love how in Dub I can hear regional accents in voices like Heiter and Eisen. Even the unique twinge of a teenager in Fern when she hears how long something will take. Flamme's voice from back in time hints to how Frieren speaks now. There is so much depth to enjoy in anime without the language translation barrier. Subbed was only better than dubbed back in the day because there were professionals doing the sub and translators doing the dub. Now that we have talented actors on both sides, it's so silly to be missing out for the sake of appearing like a 'real fan.' Frieren subbed kinda sucks. It's watching like 'best slice of life this season' and not 'The Best Anime' as it should be.

I love the amount of callbacks, references, and subtleties throughout the show. I'm on my third watch and I'm still discovering them. One of my favorite ones is from this episode, which someone already mentioned, of Eisen eating the grapes and liking them sour, and Frieren mentioned she has a spell to turn grapes sour in episode 2. Another one is in episode 1 where you can tell how much time has passed since the party's intial farewell and them meeting back up for the Era Meteor Shower. There's a trader that Frieren visits twice, and you can see that he aged a lot between both meetings.

So the journey finally begins. Some questions I had at the time i reached this episode: If Aureole is at the same place as the demon kings castle, why didnt they stumble upon it back then? Could it be that the demons are "souls gone bad" perhaps, which would mean the< originate in aureole? How did Flamme get to find it? Did the demon kings castle not exist back then? Or did she find it when she tried to find and kill the demon king? So many more questions but those were the ones that stood out to me the most. Looking forward to the next episdoes :D

The prologue i think is directed that way to have the audience to fully immerse in their world and also the reflections regarding how time is different between humans vs elf vs dwarfs.
