After reading some of the comments, I never knew this was a huge thing with Will and Mike. Maybe cause I’m not really apart of the shipping world lol but I genuinely don’t think Mike is gay, his character does not give that at all never has. I don’t see it. He deff cares for his bestfriend but has the tendency of being self centered at times but it’s always been platonic on mikes part giving how much he’s in love with el and would literally put his life on the line for her since s1. I think the biggest plot between mike and will in s5 is Will will have to come out and be honest with Mike about his feeling towards him, Mike will understand and support him being true to himself but will not correspond. I’m even more excited after reading yall comments to see if the writers takes a different approach with Mike and el relationship which I highly doubt they will. Do I think they’ll be together in the end no but not because Mike turns gay but because el may not survive all of this. That’s just my opinion though.

I think Max might be my favorite character in the whole show. I just love her vibe and the growth she goes through as a character. With Dustin and Steve, they’re part of my top three. Yeah I cried for Max too even though she isn't my fav but I guess it's because Max's journey reminds me of my past depression. I really loved this episode and I'm happy ya'll enjoyed it too! Mike was my least fav because of alot of actions from ss3 and the start of ss4 but he's one of my favorites because he's better now and moving forward. And I'm just going to say it, I ship Mike and Will... Like Mike and Eleven has had too many conflicts for me. I dislike that Mike and Eleven lie to each other... What happened to "friends don't lie" from ss1? Anyways, just my opinion and I love El's theories, she's so clever so far! I'm excited for the next reaction!

Remember in episode 3 when Mike and El had a conversation on why Mike can't express his feelings to El or say that he loves her? Go back and watch that and compare it to the conversation at 39:37 In Mike and El's conversation: El: "you don't say it, you can't even write it mike" Mike: "I do say it, you're being ridiculous!" "don't let these mouth breathers ruin YOU! ruin us" Meanwhile Mike's interaction and conversation with Will: Will tells him that if he keeps looking at the letter it won't change, then Mike TOSSES possibly the last message from his girlfriend in the trash. Right after he throws it away, Will sits next to him, it's kind of metaphoric in a way, then they have a chuckle together and the interruption trope Jonathan barges in. Then the other scene in Will's bedroom. Mike starts expressing his feelings to Will without any trouble. Mike: "Thanks by the way" Wil: "For What?" Mike: "For Knocking some sense into me, I was totally being a self pitying idiot" Will: "I didn't say it" Mike: "You didn't have to" Take a moment and compare that with his interaction with El... He goes on to give this heart to heart speech that feels intimate. If you take that speech and replace Will with Dustin or Lucas they'd be weirded out at Mike 😭. Even the script says "intimate moment is shattered by Jonathan" as he again barges in being the interruption trope, which is something they do in stories between... possible lovers. During those whole interaction the whole body language seems VERY flirty and not a casual friendly talk, and I'm not talking about Will, I'm talking about Mike! I think Mike secretly likes Will and has internalized hate but sometimes it seeps through. A lot of people might say he is just being a good friend but that's not how he treats his other friends. To add on that, I think him not hugging Will back in the airport plays into internalized self hatred or insecurity. When he was young he was so close to Will because they were kids and didn't care about all that, he even pushed someone after they called Will gay and a fairy. But after growing up and being teens it starts getting awkward and Mike knows what other kids used to call Will so it might feel weird for him. It's been hinted from the first season that Mike cares so much for Will, then it slowly shifted and all that care went to El and Will was dropped and ignored which led to their season 3 fight "It's not my fault you don't like girls". Fun fact, Eleven's first word to Mike was NO and Will's first words to Mike was YES! When he asked him to be his friend. The contrast in the story writing is definitely intentional. SOMETHING is definitely FRUITY and I refuse to dismiss it.

I never predicted the music thing. But everything else I also had my eye on during this episode(Dont want to be too specific). Some people are more locked than others. The best twists can be predicted. Its good writing if people can connect dots and shouldn't always be an indictment of the viewer or the story.

I loved this episode. Not just for Max being amazing but also for Mike and Will. For the past 2 seasons Mike has felt more like "El's boyfriend" than an actual character. So I'm glad he was able to apologize to Will and even tell him that he's special to him even compared to his other best friends.

One interesting thing (that still hasn't been confirmed so its just a theory) is that the only person to survive being in the upside down and who the Demogorgon couldn't find was will. He didn't have headphones but the ENTIRE time he was down there, he was singing his favorite song. So the whole music as an escape plot thread was foreshadowed back in season 1. Kinda neat if true.

Max's entire arc so far is a great analogy to fighting depression. You can have your loved ones try to help you, but it's also up to you in the end to fight to live. That's what happened with Max. Music helped provide an opening for her, and all her memories of her friends and the good times helped her to see that she's not alone. That she's loved. She chose to live and ran to her friends. Vecna's hold on her as a result was temporarily weakened (and notice how none of the debris was able to actually hit her as she was running). I got so emotional the first time I watched this. It hit so close to home for me. Max almost giving in but her friends pulling her back, the look of desperation on her face as she fought to live, the song lyrics...and that "I'm still here" at the end was such a gut punch. Always running up that hill... And of course, "Running Up That Hill" shot up the charts! After 37 years since it's release, the song reached #1 in multiple countries. Not even in it's initial run did the song ever reach #1 until this moment. Kate Bush was amazed at how much this song blew up considering she basically had forgotten about it after so long 😅
