Long overthinking rant incoming: The episode with Voll felt really weird to me at first. Not in a “I dislike it” kind of way, but more like, what’s the point of this? In Frieren, much like in Ghibli movies, every little thing, from the visuals to the characters to the story elements, feels so deliberate. So at first, I didn’t quite get why Voll was there. He seemed to just serve as another moment of reminiscing about the past, something Frieren could have already done with Heiter, Eisen, or Kraft. But the more I watched, the more I realized how perfectly this episode captured the passage of time and Frieren’s own fate. Frieren was genuinely excited to talk to someone who remembered a big part of her life (not just 10 years, which is nothing to her, but maybe a third of her whole lifetime if she’s around 1,100–1,200 years old). For once, she felt kind of human in how she related to the past and to another person who had lived through it. It also feels like a sign of growth. In the flashback, Frieren didn’t care much about time or memories. Yet when Voll asked if she still remembered Himmel, she felt insulted! To her, it wasn’t that long ago. But then Voll’s senility, which at first was played off as a little joke, suddenly became real. It’s like she never considered that someone who’s lived so long could still forget things that mattered deeply. With humans, she always comments on how fragile their memories are, but with Voll, it probably hurt to realize that even for long-lived beings, memories can fade too. That wasn't the case with Kraft. He’s probs a millennial older than Frieren, yet he chose not to tell her about his own heroic deeds. He said it was enough for him that he still remembered; he didn’t need anyone else to carry that memory. Voll, on the other hand, couldn’t even hold onto his own memory. No matter how important those moments once were. Fern even points out how lonely Voll must have been before they arrived, which connects beautifully to that flashback where Himmel tells Frieren to carry their memories into the future. It makes me wonder if she actually will. She’s never really shared those memories unless someone, who has heard about the hero's party, asked. So what happens if one day she's alone again, near the end of her life, trying to hold onto the memories of not just the hero’s party, but also Fern and the others and just...forgets? It’s such a sad thought, and it really helps explain why elves in this world are such solitary beings, rarely forming meaningful connections. Also, as someone who’s studied art in the past and loves drawing, there’s this one shot in the episode that really stood out to me. It’s the kind of thing an animator or artist would NEVER normally draw, but they HAD to do it for that moment, and it works beautifully. There’s actually a great video by "pey talks anime" on YT that breaks it down really well. It’s called “When Frieren broke a rule to make a better story”. Definitely worth a watch if you’re into animation details. As always, love your reactions and hope you're doing well^^

dont like the dub's interpretation - feels like a misinterpretation. frieren is "old" but not for elves and she's not very mature either, so the choice to give her a "milf voice" doesn't really fit with the character.

A neat detail about the statue of Kraft and the other hero is that the attire they're wearing is comparable to the kind of Greek/Roman inspired clothes that Frieren, Flamme, and the other humans are wearing when Frieren meets Flamme. Meaning that the great deeds that Kraft mentioned had been forgotten happened over a thousand years ago. The fact that Frieren isn't aware of the world saving exploits that Kraft engaged in means that they probably occurred before she was even born. Just speaks to how old the world here is and how there's likely been many, many heroes that have come and gone only to be forgotten. If it wasn't for the village taking care of that statue, there might not be a single tangible memory of what Kraft did left.
