this is probably the darkest/grimmest episode in the anime to date (save for maybe aura possessing the dead soldiers), and i really like this paradigm shift for us as the viewers. i know the dark themes are constantly present and are part of the world, but most of the time, it's not really shown directly to us. it's usually by word of mouth/part of dialogues in passing for worldbuilding, but this is one of the first times where we actually SEE the effects of it and are directly involved. we're hit with the realization that the demons are actually a major problem for most of the continent and not to be taken lightly. i think most people, myself included, get carried away by the strength of frieren and the party, and forget that most people aren't that strong, and wouldn't be able to deal with most of the things they do with such ease. it makes it all the more shocking when they fought that huge demon with the sword and almost had a casualty because of how powerful it was. it's even more shocking when we hear that this norm company soldier was MUCH stronger than stark and was killed in a single blow. also i love that we are getting more of the mages from the exam arc, i really liked a lot of those characters. hoping to see more of denken, methode, wirbel, land, richter, and laufen maybe. i dont see how richter or laufen would make their way back into the plot, but id be pleasantly surprised if they do

Really loved the tone shift in this episode! Amazing how they can make you care so much for a character and village in such a short time. I do think to, the fact we are going further and further north we are seeing more of the danger the demons bring. Such a good build up to all the times they mention the north is more dangerous and then seeing it first hand and now the build up to this upcoming fight! Super excited! I wonder if this is gonna lead into more of a situation where demons are kind of like planning something larger and this one attack mean something more than simply demons doing demon things. Also loved all the interactions with the characters. Felt so real (as real as fantasy goes lol) people do still smile in the face of horror. They’re still alive, and determined. It’s not like they’re cold to the people of the village, but they know what needs to be done and get to it. Love it!

nah, as i remember, they watched everything before s3 outside of channel, and then reacted to s3 and s4 when it was coming out. then there's a movie which is still in theaters, not on official streaming services, so they can't watch it.

I noticed you guys often ask for a map of their journey. There's actually an official map with an episode by episode trace of their journey so far if you want to check it out (season 1 only). But it really puts in perspective why Sein had to leave the party because his lead to Gorilla Warrior really was so far away and opposite compared to where the party took the mage exam and their current path now. season 1 was mostly very bright and sunny, this season the lighting feels like sun is always hanging lower in the sky. feels intentional... I heard the new director said it's intended these 10 eps are an extension of s1? loved the new interesting shots this episode.

Frieren season 2 seems to be following the same trend as season 1:- 1st half = slice of life. 2nd half = dark action. This episode definitely felt threatening. I love how the writing conveys power scaling through grade A, world-building dialogue (e.g. Stark's strength). I'm equally excited and nervous for the upcoming episodes.
