There’s also a big emphasis on formality, so even when someone is angry they often have to stay polite to be taken seriously or have any chance of being heard. This is why she doesn’t do her classic crash out lol.

You probably won’t see this, but just in case you do: Aesun’s fingers aren’t wrecked at the end— they’re dyed from the stuff her mom was putting on her fingers during their last conversation. Basically you crush peach flowers and rice together and apply it on your nails, then tie it in place with string or straw. So when you untie it later, your nails look rosy and “painted”! This is basically the traditional version of nail polish for us Koreans 👍 That detail makes the scene even more heartbreaking. Like her mother’s love is still with her— you can physically SEE the traces of her touch on Aesun’s hands —but she’s gone. And she’s never coming back.

I literally upgraded my subscription just for this drama because it truly deserves it. This drama is literally a masterpiece. I remember it came out around this time last year, and watching it weekly was honestly the best thing ever. It became one of my top K-dramas. The directing, the story, the characters, and the actors. No wonder it won so many awards. I’m really happy you guys are watching this kind of K-drama, away from crime and mystery. I’ve been waiting for you to watch something like this. My all-time favorite K-dramas: 1- My Dearest 2- Arthdal Chronicles S1 3- Hospital Playlist 4- Prison Playbook 5- Reply 1988 6- When Life Gives You Tangerines I later found out that three of these dramas were directed and written by the same person. That’s when I realized I had officially discovered my favorite type of dramas.🧡🧡

My mom and I just watched two more episodes and we were smiling the whole time. WLGYT is really about life, so there are ups and downs, but a lot of the tears people talk about are happy sentimental ones. There is one particularly tragic episode (that’s usually what people mean when they say “prepare the tissues”), so if you’d like a heads up beforehand just let us know. Aside from that, it’s such a beautiful story.

In the 60's, South Korea was very fresh after the Korean War which had left the peninsula absolutely devastated. Believe it or not, the North used to be richer than the South because that's where all the industry was concentrated so South Koreans really had to grit their teeth and struggle; the expected aged of 52 doesn't seem that surprising in perspective. South Korea has done a very, very long journey to where they are now. They used to be poorer than many African nations. It's safe to say that the progress they've achieved is nothing short of a miracle. They also did it with very few natural resources. Their main strength always lied in their man power, hardworking nature, resilience and emphasis on education. That is also where also a lot of their main current issues stem from that we see in more modern K-dramas; the fast and harsh progress isn't without negatives. It's very fun to see you guys react to a show that will give you a better understanding of South Korea's history. I can't wait for you guys to one day react to "Reply 1988". I know you guys would LOVE it as it has friendship and family vibes, has a good heart and is very funny.

When Life Gives You Tangerines. It’s such a wholesome show. There’s no crazy action scenes, no bullying, no big dramatic twists. It’s really just about a family trying to live their lives and get through things together. Some people might think it’s boring because it’s not super intense or flashy. It’s not like The Glory where you’re constantly shocked or waiting for revenge or something. But that’s actually what makes it special. Even without all that, it still keeps you wanting to watch the next episode. I don’t know how it does it, but it just does. This was the first K-drama my mom ever watched, and after that she got hooked. She’s watched so many since then, but this is still her favorite. It’s one of my favorites too. The director did an amazing job, and Park Bo-gum and IU were so good in it. They really brought the story to life. Honestly, nothing has compared to it for me since.
