Lament Concept Sketch

I'd place this one as one of Justin Nelson's best original mech designs so there wasn't much to change about it. Some proportions changes like giving it a bit more torso rather than such long shoulder spacers or the previous mini's long wait section that was a sub par solution to the art's unseen areas.
The biggest design change was the cockpit area. The original art has some interesting shapes that are hard to resolve in 3D space, with the sunroof glass protrusion breaking the top flow. I moved to minimize that and focus more on the warhammer head style shaping but that didn't pass the bosses, so we went with joining the front and top glass sections instead.
For those that haven't played this mech give it a try. It's a very efficient package at delivering damage for a low tonnage IS heavy. And definitely one of the better looking mechs from the Dark Age era.

I am curious about your process of creating art like this. How much pencil on paper is there?

Well, I’ll weigh in on the sentiment that overall the design looks more balanced but it’s incredible how much personality and stance the mech loses with this cockpit. It feels a bit disproportional since it seems like an add-on rather than an extension of the torso “hunch”, which looks smaller and slightly awkward. Not to mention that it gets very similar to the Lancelot and the Penetrator, probably a number of others too. Apologies if this sounds opinionated, but like you said, the base was solid, just needed polish, not a facelift into something different.
