process: my first diary comic!
🕑 Added 2019-12-04 19:23:42 +0000 UTChi y'all!! so i'm a part of a collaborative zine project here in seattle with a handful of other local creatives. the theme of the zine was "do you want to know?" in regards to "secrecy, willful ignorance, and social undercurrents." each artist was free to interpret it however we wished, and i decided on hiding from self-truths, or the fear of confronting said truths. i've always used the metaphor of doors to describe different states of mental health, so i knew i wanted to make a piece involving doors, and i thought i'd try my hand at my at a small comic!
i learned that comics, or illustrative storytelling like this, is much harder than i thought!! in regards to pacing, the use of negative space, how you lay out your writing...i think that i had a pretty decent result, and i kind of want to try my hand at more diary comics. my therapist even said they could be very useful in working through different feelings and things. we shall see!! regardless, above you will see my final draft vs. my final draft! i'm pretty happy with how this turned out, and though i know i could spend ages nitpicking it, i'm telling myself that "done is better than perfect" and it's plenty good enough. everytime i work on something like this, or a commission, or even videos, i always have to remind myself to "be happy with B– work" as brooke castillo says, or else i will never finish anything in my whole life lolol. i hope you like this small comic!!
also, one day, i will not be scared of drawing better and more expressive hands, i promise they're just so HARD

this looks super great! ✨ comic illustration is really a handful but you're doing so well at it, chey! paneling, compositions, story.. you name it, they take a lot of effort and time 😭 but you're doing a-ok and i'm glad you were able to finalize your ideas (i would've never ended, if it were me haha) looking forwards how this little one looks like in you guys' zine! here's ton of support! .｡*ﾟ+.*.｡
