Thanks, I'll try it next time. My concern was that I'd get a fruit filling that was like regular tapioca with fruit in it, but I guess it disappears into the filling, just thickening it.

I love that you took advantage of your mulberry tree. I live in Iowa where mulberry trees abound in fence rows & tree lines where most people don't want them, as they're often considered invasive since birds will bring their seeds into unwanted places! However, I've always found them to be delicious and as a kid would ride my horse up under our mulberry tree and we would both eat them off the branches. Thanks for using them and making this delicious-looking confection! :)

I also oved the little toad, and overall beauty of the mulberry pie. The mulberries made me remember my brother and I picking (aka... stealing) and eating them still warm from the sun. Neither one of us has ever tasted a mulberry pie, but I'm gonna bet that it's delicious. I'm now on the lookout for a tree....LOL

A word of warning from someone who once had a mulberry tree in their yard. If you have outdoor furniture with light cushions, or a hammock or anything you wouldn't want stained with splotches of purple, you need to watch out at this time of year. Birds loooooove mulberries and the berries turn their poop purple and it can stain.

Mulberries are super yummy, but you really should have soaked them in ice water to make sure there were no silkworm larva in them. Not harmful just kinda gross. The pie looks amazing!

About picking Mulberries (as opposed to the shake method)- You want to pick them when they are fully black. if there is any red or white then they will be tart. Fully black they're nice and sweet. They're also really juicy and soft so when you pick them you very gently roll them with the pads of your fingers, soft fleshy part only. If they're properly ripe the soft rolling motion will twist them and pop them right off the branch. If they don't pop off they're not fully ripe, move on. DO NOT SQUEEZE. When ripe they are so soft they will burst in your fingers, the juices will run down your arm, and they stain anything they touch. Your skin, your clothes- and it's color fast to boot!

I've been baking pies for 20 years, but you taught me some new tricks! Even though red mulberry is native to Indiana (and to pretty much the entire eastern half of the U.S.), they grow so fast and in such profusion that we mostly treat them weed trees. But they are terrific for feeding wildlife and as a sacrifice crop to save your other fruit trees.

Your mulberry tree may be an artifact of the attempt to create an American silk industry… it was a common “get rich quick” scheme. The worms eat only mulberry leaves. Your pie looked amazing! I usually use minute tapioca to thicken fruit pies. It makes a lovely clear filling and never tastes starchy.

Watching your Kitty play with the flowers gave me anxiety. For all of you who don't know, the entire Lily plant is toxic, even the water it is in. Eating or licking just a small amount of the pollen can cause your fur baby to develop fatal kidney failure in less than 3 days.

Oh my goodness Christine, please tell me that you only hand picked enough for B-Roll & shook/tapped the rest onto cloth (similar to harvesting olives). Mulberries have always played a large role in Appalachian food ways.
