Grand Prix (Rhythm)
🕑 Added 2021-10-07 15:48:20 +0000 UTCToday we will be looking at the rhythm guitar in Grand Prix. It's one of the many rhythmic elements that gives the song its momentum.
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that I'm using a common trick where you take open strings in the key and use them to add some glam to your chords. This song is in A major, so the E and B strings can both be used to spice things up. It gives you a very chimey sound that's pretty great when used sparingly. This lesson also truly falls off the rails at the end, and for that I apologize.

Try to be aware of all the different ways you can mute a string. Left hand thumb, underside of your left hand fingers, index fingertip, any fingers that aren't being used in the chord can all be used to mute if it works in a given situation. Also, one of the most useful things I've learned is this: instead of thinking of muting strings as something you do after you place a chord down or whatever, make it your default position to have all 6 strings muted. And then, making notes and playing music is simply selectively releasing the muting on a given string or set of strings to make your desired note or chord ring out, only when you need it. When you're done with it, you go back to the muted position. Just this subtle shift in how you think about it can be very helpful IMO!

I've been working with my own teacher on funkier and more rhythmic strumming like this! I know you're not using it in particular in this video, but I've been having a lot of trouble getting percussive strumming down. Do you have any tips for good, consistent percussive muting while I practice it like crazy?

Oh MAN listening to this come together was magical. Guitar's just COOL sometimes, you know? Rhythm playing is something I always have a bit of trouble with--slowly working on fixing that!
Don't think I've been appreciating the rhythm section enough, it's so funky! Vibes are particularly chaotic in this video, love it
