Replace San Francisco and Portland at the first night battle off Guadalcanal with Maryland and Colorado. It’s my understanding both Standard BB’s were being used as escorts off Fiji.

Drach - Were there any post 1900 turreted battleships/battle cruisers that used smoothbore, breechloading main batteries? If so, were there attempts to stabilize the projectile sans rifling?

Though unused the tracks and slipways were still in place during the period when Phidelphia Naval Shipyard was overhauling the ship I was assigned to.
I know it falls outside your channel timeframe but in answer to the first question I believe the old cross channel hovercraft and hydrofoils were built with government assistance and were planned to be brought into RN service as fast transports if another large war broke out. A bit like the transatlantic liners during WW1 and WW2.
