Apologies if a bunch of others have said this, but you're using the sword wrong: they changed how combat works, you need to time your hits now. It works like Secret of Mana: every attack drains that action bar you see in the middle of the screen, and if you attack again before it refills, you do minimal damage. By waiting for it to refill before attacking again, you'll do way more damage.
