Throwback: Basil Concept Art
A few years ago, Basil was known as 'Barton'. The guy's been through multitudinous style changes but his general personality traits remain the same even now.
Cakewalk
Based on an episode of Bake Off I saw one time. Thank you, James Acaster. Your anxious energy makes for terrific inspiration.
WIP: 10-Minute Drawing
This is also a preview of the next (main) RH comic. It's been a while, but I'm coming on home, webcomic community!
Forget-Me-Not
See also: leaving the front door unlocked, leaving the headlights on in your car and forgetting to feed the pets.
Flashback
They're tiny, they're toony, they're all a little loony. This was practice for drawing children. Yes it's difficult, but like, what do kids wear? That's the real struggle. It's like, no, Google Image Search, don't give me fashion blogs, give me the norm.
WIP: Line Art Progression
A chunk of real-time line work, I guess to give an idea of how long it takes if nothing else. Inking the characters is the lengthiest part of the process for sure, but I wouldn't spend so many hours on it if it wasn't at least a little bit fun.
Q&A: The Taming of the Shoe
As FAQs go, this is likely the most F Q I get. If you have any others, send em on in.
Candy Pain
She's sweet and sour.
WIP: Ch-ch-ch-changes
The crappy low-res scanned-onto-my-computer-with-a-phone-app sketches I do really seem to have no bearing on the final line work, as you can see here in the above preview of my next comic (out this week).
Throwback: Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn
Let's for a moment harken back to an era wherein I actually drew Lee in different outfits. What a crazy time.
WIP: Speech Bubble
Well, never made a time-lapse video before. I'm working the semantics of getting these made, so hopefully should be able to record some more extensive stuff in the near future. In the meantime here's a short WIP of how I make speech bubbles.
Q&A: Legging it
We did a Q&A! A needlessly sarcastic Q&A!
WIP: Say Cheese
With an absolute pissload of layers, any old person fella can make themself a halfway decent thumbnail image.
CospLee: Raven
Rediscovered a sketch of Lee as Teen Titan's Raven for?? some??? reason?????Maybe it's because they both fly and have hoods. Who knows? Not me. I can't be expected to know why I do things, man.
Throwback: Power Pose
Quite genuinely I think that style got worse for a while there. I'll have to redo this picture one of these days to make sure I haven't taken a step too far in the desaturated direction.
WIP: Line Thickness
Also technically a sneak peek of the next big Roundhouse comic, this is a quick example of the secondary step I take after drawing the initial line art. I go right in close and erase bits of line in some places, while thickening bits of line in others. The idea is to simulate bolder pen strokes, and...
WIP: Roundhouse Interior
I put this together in Sketchup years ago and have been changing various pieces of it ever since. Let's just say a big round room wasn't the ideal choice to be writing most of my scenes.
Throwback: Goth Phase
Back when I experimented with Lee's wardrobe and the art style in equal measure.
WIP: Freddy's First Appearance
Time is of the essence when coming up with new ideas for the next comic. I write down a script roughly, I plot out a thumbnailed page carelessly, and I sketch a few warm-up drawings haphazardly. But then the speedy progression of time is a real prick that way.
Downed House
#relatable, probably...
Throwback: Jim jams
So much for anatomic consistency.
Lee and Hilda
Hilda's pretty great on Netflix, but I'll always like the graphic novel it's based on just a little bit more, for unbiased reasons probably.
Throwback: DLC costume
I had a go redrawing a bunch of old Lee pictures a couple years hence. This is what I like to call "Lee's Batman Phase".
