Sea Dart Anatomy
Starting the layout showing the matriarch instructing the young birrin how to prepare a spearfished seadart, a tasty marine creature common in the local oceans. Taking the chance to put together an infographic of the internal anatomy and key features of this important nutrient source for birrin afte...
'Puddle Jumper' Final
The HD final of the little birrin family floatplane! I will modify the cockpit art I did earlier to better fit the final window design here. Below are the cement ruins of some pre-Fall War coastal facility now inundated by the risen sea.
Stone and Seagrass
Adding more detail as I go! Some pre-Fall War ruins of what might have been breakwaters or other coastal facilities in the mix.
Floatplane WIP
Happy-ish with the plane design now, can spend some time on the backdrop!
Floatplane progress
Painting in my own water now: current direction for the plane is unpainted wood as the family is still experimenting with it but that may change!
Floatplane WIP
Forgive the literally a photo temp background: used for informing the lighting.External view of the Puddlejumper: currently working a tail-less angle, using a deep wing wing with 'elevon' control surfaces.
Finished Cockpit - HD
Reward for my patrons! The HD version of the puddlejumper cockpit with the Matriarch at the controls and Jirri (final name pending) posing a minor nuisance.
Cockpit Progress
Need to design the instruments and matriarch's costume and jewellery, but getting there!
Cockpit Progress - Sans Instruments
Work continues on the cockpit design, I am going to start adding instruments and controls, among other things. If it looks like this is a dangerous situation: it is! River valley folk are a bit... casual about such things.
Idiot in the Cockpit
Minor update on the layout: the curious baby wants a look around. Rotating the wheel between the legs manages the roll, while moving the wheel support arm up and down controls pitch (until i can think of something better)
Cockpit doodles
Starting to lay out the floatplane cockpit.
Complete - HD 'Spyhopping'
The Vignette is as good as done! Here is the HD file for supporters :)
Home Stretch
ALMOST done with the encounter piece. Just needs some marine nonsense and spit and polish!
Encounter WIP
An early progress image of the young birrin encountering spy hopping beings. LOTS to do still!
Next Book Image Poll
Which of the two files do you find most interesting a way to meet these dolphin creatures?Don't let that one is in color sway you!
Seafloor Vignette - HD Image
A sample of life on the seafloor in the valley inlet, part of the birrin story. The swimming creatures are sand-darts, fast and quick breeding, which survived and then thrived after the Fall War. The perforated oval is the retractable feeding body of a small 'invertebrate' buried in the sand,...
Seafloor WIP
A Work In Progress of the sea floor and the life in the shallows the sisters are exploring in the book. Going to add plants and other little critters as I go.
Organising the Book
I am testing Notion to give me some structure while I put this book together. It lets me see exactly what needs to be done, and I can set my own deadlines to do it.
InDesign
I am working to create a look for the birrin book in the test chapter, winging it and learning as I go.
Sample Chapter WIP
Progress designing the sample chapter: the sisters exploring a rich coastal inlet.
Spear Thrower - Mechanism
Textless infographic showing process of loosing the fishing spear: the hooked leather straps are fastened to a chest harness with the head in an S-curve before throwing.
Spear Thrower Head Study
A closeup for the book, showing how the spear thrower is mounted in its primed condition.
Final - Spearfishing
High resolution image of the spearfishing sisters: behind them is part of the bay complex of the river valley, protected by dunes and vegetation from heavy seas. The shallows of this part of the inlet offer excellent sight-fishing for those skilled enough to use the overhead spear-thrower.
Spearfishing WIP
Further developments of the fishing sisters
WIP - Spearfishing
I am working on the spearfishing scene in parallel with designing the spear-thrower itself: it seems I need to turn it upside down so that the curved section doesn't jab the user in the chin when they use it!.
Spear Thrower
Early work on a detail study of one of the birrin sisters wearing their wooden spear-thrower.
Hospital Art
A collection of the sketches I made during my month in the psych ward.
Smoke Break
Soldiers of the Northern Reclamation on a smoke break. It is damn hot in those uniforms, but during first contact with other birrin societies they tend to go for shock and awe with full body armor.
Reclamation Soldier WIP
More work on the Reclamation guards 'at ease'.Experiments with gun placement, costume design etc are ongoing even at this stage!Back out of hospital.
Soldiers WIP
Developing the vignette of the Reclamation security detail.
